Europa Nostra Award

The International Summer School on Historic Masonry Structures (HIMASS), a two-week international school held annually near a historic Italian or Spanish village, founded jointly by the University of Salerno, the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, and the University of Roma 3, on the initiative of Professors Maurizio Angelillo, Santiago Huerta, and Gianmarco De Felice, has received the prestigious European Heritage "Europa Nostra" Award 2026. The European Heritage Europa Nostra Awards are Europe's highest recognition in the field of cultural heritage. Established in 2002 by the European Commission, managed by Europa Nostra, and supported by the EU's Creative Europe programme, they recognize outstanding achievements in the preservation of tangible, intangible, and digital cultural heritage. Each year, the programme awards up to 30 outstanding heritage projects from across Europe. The achievements are evaluated and awarded in five distinct categories. HIMASS received one of the five awards in the category: Education, Training and Skills: projects promoting knowledge transfer and capacity building.

This recognition celebrates not only the programme, but also the community that has made it possible over the years: students, tutors, lecturers, researchers and professionals who have participated in the various editions and contributed through study, enthusiasm and commitment in the fieldwork.

Since its launch in 2018, HIMASS has involved around 150 participants from more than 20 countries and has worked on 28 historic monuments across Italy and Spain. Each edition has generated new case studies, new exchanges and lasting international connections.
